THIS MORNING WE HAVE SPENT TIME PRAYING.

PRAYER IS IMPORTANT. WE ARE CALLED TO PRAY.

WE ARE ALSO CALLED TO ACTION.

PENTECOST IS THE DAY THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH TURNED INTO ACTION.

ON PENTECOST SUNDAY WE REMEMBER THE DAY JESUS EMPOWERED THE CHURCH TO FULFILL THE MISSION HE BEGAN

Luke 4:18-19 NIV
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

THIS IS THE CALL OF THE CHURCH: TO PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS.

John 16:5-7 NIV
5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

WE HAVE A GOD WHO CARES ABOUT OUR WORLD.

JESUS DID NOT LEAVE US ALONE.

Acts 1:4 NIV
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

Acts 1:8 NIV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

WE ARE NOT EXPECTED TO FULFILL GOD’S CALL ALONE

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A GIFT, HE IS A GIFT FOR US, AND FOR THE CHURCH —BUT NOT JUST FOR US.

1 Corinthians 12:31 NIV
31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

”Eagerly desire the gifts”

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

HOW DO WE EAGERLY DESIRE THE GIFTS…

Acts 1:14 NIV
14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Acts 2:1-8 NIV
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

THE DISCIPLES WAITED, IN THE UNKNOWN

THE DISCIPLES PRAYED, EXPECTANTLY

IT CHANGED THE WORLD…

WHEN WE WAIT ON AND PRAY FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT…IT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.

Acts 2:40-42 NIV
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

THE CHURCH IS BORN AT PENTECOST.

IT STARTED IN AN UPPER ROOM, WITH PEOPLE PRAYING AND WAITING.

IT FUELED TO FLAME WITH THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND THE WILLINGNESS OF PEOPLE TO STEP BOLDLY INTO THE CROWDS.

Acts 2:43-47 NIV
43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

THEY CONTINUED TO SEE THE HOLY SPIRIT MOVE THROUGH

THE MANY WONDERS AND SIGNS THE APOSTLES DID THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

WE SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE THESE THINGS TODAY.

IF WE ARE GOING TO FULFILL THE COMMISSION OF JESUS IN ACTS 1:8 THE CALL TO ACTION ON BEHALF OF A DYING, HURTING, GRIEF STRICKEN WORLD…

WE NEED TO EAGERLY DESIRE AND SEEK THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT, AND THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT.

SO LIKE THE EARLY DISCIPLES WE ARE GOING TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO PRAY FOR THE GIFT AND PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND TO PRAY FOR HIM TO EMPOWER YOU THROUGH THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT TO FULFILL HIS CALL.
