NOTES:

Colossians 2:16-23 NIV

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules“Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Colossians 2:8-15 NIV

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily formand in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christhaving been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sinshaving canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

We have to take the whole section in, to understand the passage we are focusing on.

Christ has “canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness…” and “disarmed the powers and authorities, …”
“Therefore…” the rest of our passage today.

Colossians 2:16 NIV

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Colossians 2:17 NIV

These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

“… do not let anyone judge you…”
Could be translated more clearly as “do not let anyone pass judgment on you…

This is not to say no one can correct you or “be judgy”. This is about not removing someone from fellowship in the body of Christ over things of the Law (which were dealt with by Christ on the cross).

“…what you eat or drink…”
Referring to Jewish kosher laws from the Old Testament and additional rabbinical teachings.

“…a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.”
Jewish holy days: annual feasts, monthly celebrations, and weekly Sabbath.

The OT is not to be done away with… it is the shadow of Christ.

Colossians 2:13-14 NIV

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sinshaving canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

Colossians 2:18 NIV

Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

So where legalism was the first issue, now it’s hyper-spiritualism and mysticism that is also a problem.

On false humility:

Matthew 6:5 NIV

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

“Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.”

They worship their own “visions” and are “puffed up” by their own imaginations. None of it is from God.

Jeremiah 23:16 NIV

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.

Colossians 2:19 NIV

They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

Colossians 1:18 NIV

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

All prophecy and working of spiritual gifts (including teaching) must be in line with Christ as the head.

All true spiritual things must align with God and His word.

This is how we judge false teachers; false religions; and false prophets.

Colossians 2:20-21 NIV

Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules“Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?

Romans 14:10-14 NIV

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.It is written: “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ”So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.

1 Corinthians 6:13 NIV

You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

Colossians 2:22-23 NIV

These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

1 Corinthians 1:17-21 NIV

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Be careful of rules added to scripture. True wisdom comes from the word of God, not humans.

The gospel is the good news that all who believe are reconciled to God through Christ and his sacrifice. Not through anything that we do.

Colossians 2:8-14 NIV

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily formand in Christ you have been brought to fullness.
