NOTES:
When you pray in the name of Jesus, what kinds of things are you praying for?
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.You know the way to the place where I am going.”Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

He calls his disciples to believe in him.
He calls us to do so as well.
This declaration of Jesus is a statement of salvation, of authority, and of power.
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus
Jesus is the way, the only way
But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God
Jesus is going away, but his death is not defeat–it is victory.
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Jesus is the way, has made a way, and is making a way.
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? Jesus declares his identity and authority and invites them to believe in him.
He invites us to do the same.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was with God in the beginning.Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
The disciples performed many miracles in the name of Jesus to continue the good work he began.
It is in his name, on his authority, and for his glory that we do so as well.
We are not called to greater faith, but to believe in Jesus and out of that belief we will participate in greater works.
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseasesand he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.
Jesus invites his disciples who believe in him to do the works he has been doing. He invites us to do the same.
Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
So often we pray for our will, our desires, our plans. And often we are left disappointed.
Instead when we pray in the name of Jesus we pray for salvation, honor his authority, and for his good works in this world.
“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your nameyour kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
How have you been praying in the name of Jesus? What have you been praying for? How could your prayers honor Jesus?
