MESSAGE NOTES

Church is not a Ted Talk. It’s not a concert. It’s not attendance.
Church is the body of Christ coming together to worship, grow, and serve according to the gifting and calling of God.
ALL DIVERSITY IN PEOPLE AND THEIR GIFTS COMES FROM THE SAME GOD.
UNIQUE PEOPLE. DIFFERENT GIFTS. SAME GOD.

1 Corinthians 12:1 NIV
1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.

Church in Corinth. Lots of issues. Lots of amazing work in Jesus’ name.
Incredible gifts. And more issues.
1 Corinthians Chapters 12-14 teaches us about worship/church and how the spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit are to be used in all their variety for the same purpose of building up the church by the power of the One Holy Spirit who is in us all.

UNIQUE PEOPLE. DIFFERENT GIFTS. SAME GOD.

Luke 11:9-13 NIV
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

1 Corinthians 12:2-3 NIV

2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

Pagan (unbeliever) :: mute idol (dead/powerless god)
Believer :: Holy Spirit empowers “Jesus is Lord”
The Holy Spirit does not lead anyone to lie about God or speak heresy or teach against Jesus or the scriptures.
Easy test for teaching, prophecy, revelation, “word”, etc: check the Scriptures.

UNIQUE PEOPLE. DIFFERENT GIFTS. SAME GOD.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NIV

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Same thing three times = PAY ATTENTION
Parallel/repeated statements:
Different: gifts, service, working
SAME: Spirit, Lord, God
UNIQUE PEOPLE. DIFFERENT GIFTS. SAME GOD.

1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

This is WHY there are spiritual gifts among the church:
GIFTS ARE GIVEN BY THE SPIRIT
FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THE CHURCH

1 Corinthians 12:8-10 NIV

8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

message of wisdom: understanding the mysteries of God; knowing how to apply the knowledge of scripture and of God’s will (1 Corinthians 2:6-16)
message of knowledge: knowing unknowable things by the Holy Spirit (2 Samuel 12: Nathan confronts David)
faith: the faith to see miraculous things happen; the faith to trust God will do these incredible things
gifts of healing: Jesus, Paul, Peter, and others healed by word, sight, touch, prayer, etc. Physical (and mental/emotional) healing as well as spiritual healing (casting out demons/spirits).
miraculous powers: Moses split the sea, Elijah called on rain, Jesus feeding thousands.
prophecy: speaking about future events, or revealing relevant truth from God’s word for today
distinguishing between spirits: discerning the voice of God vs. evil spirits
speaking in tongues: other languages, including prayer languages
interpretation of tongues: understanding an unknown language and interpreting for the benefit of the church body

1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV

11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

UNIQUE PEOPLE. DIFFERENT GIFTS. SAME GOD.

Romans 12:3-13 NIV

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. 9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Ephesians 4:3-7 NIV

3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
