Proverbs 3:5 NIV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heartand lean not on your own understanding;

Acts 27:1-2 NIV
1 When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment. 2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.

Acts 27:3 NIV
3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.

Acts 27:4-5 NIV
4 From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us. 5 When we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia.

Acts 27:6-8 NIV
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board. 7 We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone. 8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.

Acts 27:9-12 NIV
9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, 10 “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” 11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. 12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

PAUL: “don’t go…”
BUT THE CENTURION, INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO PAUL, …
Paul learned that it’s rough to not listen to God (and/or Jesus, or the Holy Spirit)

Acts 26:14 NIV
14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

OBEDIENCE IS EVERYTHING

“it is hard for you to kick against the goads”
Big stick for prodding cattle = cattle prod.
Sometimes an ornery cow kicks at it instead of moving. Then gets prodded harder.
This is a sign of stubbornness. “My way” or “I don’t want to go”
But we are called to OBEDIENCE.
Obedience to God is kind of the whole point.

1 Samuel 15:22-23 NIV
22 But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

rebellion = witchcraft?!?

WHY?
Because rebellion/arrogance is witchcraft/idolatry.
It’s placing SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD AS THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY.
This is the ORIGINAL SIN. It’s the first lie we bought into as humans, and what led to the need for redemption and salvation.

Genesis 2:15-17 NIV
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Genesis 3:1-7 NIV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. The ORIGINAL SIN is rebellion against God.
The ORIGINAL SIN is rejection of God and elevation of another (usually ourselves).
The ORIGINAL SIN is idolatry and pride.
“hard to kick against the goads”

“Pray about it and do what God says.”

Acts 5:38-39 NIV
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

Romans 5:1-21 NIV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.
