NOTES:

Matthew 21:1-9 NIV

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet“ Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus announces the king has come to Jerusalem.
Jesus came to Jerusalem as King
He was received as King
He was not the revolutionary King they hoped for
He was the King they needed.

What does it mean for us today?

Matthew 21:1-3 NIV

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciplessaying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

The timing is intentional.

Luke 6:27-36 NIV

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate youbless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.Do to others as you would have them do to you.“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

The proclamation is intentional.
The word Jesus uses for Lord was translated throughout the septuagint as κύριος and is transliterated as: “Kurios”

It was used throughout the Old and New Testaments for Yahweh (God), as a title for Kings, Rulers, and Masters.

Matthew 21:4-5 NIV

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

Zechariah 9:9 NIV

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Daniel 7:13-14 NIV

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

The King has come, the new Kingdom is here.

Matthew 21:6-7 NIV

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

Jesus will enter Jerusalem, not as a conquering King but as a King enters during times of peace.

Zechariah 9:9-10 NIV

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Matthew 21:8-9 NIV

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

“Hosanna” translates the Hebrew expression that originally was a cry for help: “Save”

Psalms 118:25-26 NIV

LORD, save us! LORD, grant us success!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you.

He is not the King they expected.
He is the King they needed.

Jesus will offer them salvation and peace. However, it isn’t going to be offered the way they expected.

Romans 5:1-5 NIV

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christthrough whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseveranceperseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Romans 5:6-10 NIV

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

This is the mighty King. The one who peacefully returned to his holy city, to once again save and deliver his people.

The people didn’t understand they didn’t need a revolutionary leader, they needed a humble King, willing to lay down his life for them.

Romans 5:9-11 NIV

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Philippians 2:6-10 NIV

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantagerather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every namethat at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth

Jesus was and is a King unlike any before or since.

This is not a conquering, oppressive king.

This is the God of all creation, the King of Heaven, come to that which he created, willing to endure torture, humiliation, and death to offer us the opportunity to believe in him, and to call him Lord.

He alone is deserving of your worship, and honor and homage, and allegiance.

Luke 6:46-49 NIV

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Jesus calls for us to believe, and to put his words into practice.

How easy it is to call on the name of the King, and then when things don’t go the way we expect, we abandon him.

Do you know Jesus as King and Lord?

How does your way of life reflect it?

REFLECT: How is God speaking to you through his word today?
