NOTES:

Mark 4:35-41 NIV

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

This is part one of “triumph over hostile powers” in 4 ways:
1. nature
2. demons
3. disease
4. death

BECAUSE JESUS IS GOD.
AND YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT.

Mark 4:35-36 NIV

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

PARALLELS WITH JONAH:

DANGEROUS STORM
JONAH 1:4 :: MARK 4:37

Mark 4:37 NIV

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

Jonah 1:4 NIV

Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.

SLEEPING MAIN CHARACTER
JONAH 1:5 :: MARK 4:38a

Mark 4:38 NIV

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Jonah 1:5 NIV

All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

FRIGHTENED CREW WAKES THEM
JONAH 1:6 :: MARK 4:38b

Mark 4:38 NIV

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Jonah 1:6 NIV

The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”

DIVINE INTERVENTION
JONAH 1:14-15 :: MARK 4:39

Mark 4:39 NIV

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Jonah 1:14-15 NIV

Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.

THE CREW RESPONDS WITH AMAZEMENT
JONAH 1:16 :: MARK 4:41

Mark 4:41 NIV

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Jonah 1:16 NIV

At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT RECOGNIZING WHO JESUS IS… WHO GOD IS.

With that in mind, Jesus’ response to the disciples makes much more sense.

Mark 4:37 NIV

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

THE STORM IS TERRIFYING AND BEYOND THEIR CONTROL.

Mark 4:38 NIV

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

THE DISCIPLES ARE TERRIFIED,
BUT JESUS IS IN COMPLETE CONTROL.

Mark 4:39 NIV

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

LIKE JONAH SAID…

Jonah 1:9 NIV

He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

YAHWEH IS THE ONE WHO MADE THE LAND AND SEA.

THE DISCIPLES SHOULD BE GETTING THIS…

Mark 4:40 NIV

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They’ve heard John teach about Jesus.
They’ve heard the response of demons.
They’ve seen healings.
They’ve seen and heard Jesus claim to forgive sin!
They’ve heard Jesus teach of his kingdom.

HE IS THE KING OF HEAVEN AND EARTH: JESUS IS GOD.

So where is their faith?

Mark 4:41 NIV

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Just like the crew of Jonah’s boat, the expectation would be to respond in faith and worship YAHWEH.

But the disciples seem to still be doubting and missing it.

Mark 2:5 NIV

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Reflection:

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO?
IN YOUR LIFE? OTHERS’? SCRIPTURE?
HOW ARE YOU RESPONDING TO HIM?

REFLECT: How is God speaking to you through his word today?
