NOTES:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was with God in the beginning.Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus is God. “from the beginning…” Jesus is man. “we have heard…seen with our eyes… looked and our hands have touched…”
The DIVINE INCARNATION is all over this. And everything else we read from John in this letter is based on this truth.
“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
THE MESSAGE: GOD IS LIGHT.
This is the MESSAGE FROM GOD. Given to us to DECLARE TO OTHERS.
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
Prophesied from way back in the OT, God would send his light into the world. GOD IS LIGHT. IN THE LIGHT IS NO DARKNESS.
JESUS IS THE LIGHT. AS WE FOLLOW HIM, WE ARE CLEANSED OF DARKNESS.
BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS, WE ARE PURIFIED OF SIN.
Themes: darkness/death/sin/unrighteousness light/life/purity/righteousness
WE ALL NEED THIS.
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
3 TESTS OF FAITH: each with an “if we claim…” statement. “IF…THEN…” patterns of false claims and consequences as well as truths and results.
1. IF WE CLAIM TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM… YET WALK IN DARKNESS… 2. IF WE CLAIM TO BE WITHOUT SIN… WE DECEIVE OURSELVES, NO TRUTH IN US. 3. IF WE CLAIM WE HAVE NOT SINNED… WE CALL GOD A LIAR, NO WORD IN US.
If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
TEST 1: DO YOU HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM? FALSE CLAIM: “I CAN WALK IN DARKNESS AND BE SAVED.” TRUTH: WALK IN THE LIGHT. – have fellowship with other believers – with the blood of Jesus. – Jesus purifies us from sin by his blood.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
TEST 2: ADMIT YOU ARE A SINNER.
FALSE CLAIM: “I AM BEYOND SINNING ANYMORE.” TRUTH: CONFESS YOUR SIN AND BE FORGIVEN.
YOU ARE A SINNER. CONFESS. JESUS WILL FORGIVE YOU. AND PURIFY YOU.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godnot by works, so that no one can boast.
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
TEST 3: ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR SIN.
FALSE CLAIM: “I HAVE NOT SINNED.” TRUTH: ALL HAVE SINNED.
If you do not confess/admit your sin and your need for salvation, not only do you not receive it, YOU MAKE GOD OUT TO BE A LIAR. AND. The WORD IS NOT IN YOU.
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentilefor all have sinned and fall short of the glory of Godand all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
EXAMINE YOUR HEART. TURN TO GOD. REPENT. CONFESS.
If you have done so, then know that the path God is placing you on includes sharing this good news with others.
AND KNOW THAT FOR THEM AND FOR YOU, THERE IS GRACE IN CHRIST.
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
